The Ministry of Education and Training has organized two sod turning ceremonies , in Thaba-Tseka and Mafeteng to launch construction of 16 secondary schools by three different development partners in various districts of the country. The two ceremonies scheduled for August 25th in Thaba-Tseka town and August 28th at Matholeng in Mafeteng, are a result of the development partners' positive response to the Ministry's proposals for funding to construct new secondary schools. The cooperating partners are the People's Republic of China which has given a grant worth M20, 000,000.00 for the construction of two schools in Thaba-Tseka and Qacha'snek. The African Development Bank(ADB) has approved a loan of $ 5,670, 172.00 towards construction of 7 secondary schools in the districts of Botha-Bothe, Leribe, Maseru, Mafeteng, Mohale's hoek and Qacha'snek. ADB will also finance construction of teachers' houses and Science laboratories in 5 existing schools and girls hostels in two existing schools. The government of Japan has given a grant worth M20,000,000.00 towards construction of 7 schools in the districts of Mokhotlong, Botha-Bothe, Leribe, Berea, Mafeteng and Quthing. All these schools are expected to be operational in January 2009.Facilities in these proposed schools include six classrooms, a staffroom, science laboratory, ICT training room , toilets, a principal's house and two teachers' houses. |
